15 November 2012

Dear Parents / Caregivers

We are all busy getting our items ready for our school concert. Don’t forget to pencil this in for 27th November at 6pm. We will have our new stage to perform on.

Burglary

Last weekend our school was burgled. We had our lunch room broken into and a great deal of food stolen and some of our lunch boxes. This is very disappointing and means we have to replace the broken windows and stolen goods and money does not get spent on new resources for our children. The burglary took place at 2.17 in the early hours of Sunday morning. There were four youths who we captured on our cameras. We want our school to keep its resources so our children can get a better education so please be aware of what is happening around our school as it is not the teachers school but the whole community’s school.

Cross Country

We held a very successful cross country last week. Tyrone from Room 2 must have been very tired as he ran the Year 1 race twice and won both times and also ran the Year 2 race and had a placing in that as well even though he is only a Year 1. Well done!

We would like to congratulate all our winners

6 November 2012

Dear Parents / Caregivers

Our term seems to be quickly passing and we have been very busy at school.

ART EXHIBITION

The art exhibition was very successful and many children were able to take their purchased artwork home.

We had lots of compliments about the quality of the children’s art and I know parents were very proud of the work their child had completed.

PRESCHOOL

Dawson Primary has a preschool that runs two mornings a week. This is a free service but we ask that parents stay and help the teachers. Preschool runs on Monday and Thursday in the school hall. It starts at 9 and finishes at 12.If you wish to enroll please get a form at the school office.

SCHOOL UNIFORM

All children are expected to be in their school uniform every day. If they are not wearing their uniform then the principal needs to be contacted as to the reason.

School uniforms can be purchased from Postie Plus at the Manukau Supercentre.

HATS

All children are expected to wear a hat at morning tea and lunchtime this term. We are a sun safe school. At this time we do not have a school hat so any good hat that provides cover can be worn. Yesterday 53 children could not play outside, as they did not have a hat.

LATENESS to SCHOOL

I am very disappointed with the number of children late to school each morning. It is important that children learn from an early age that getting to school on time is important as later when they work they will be required to start at a certain time. Late children disrupt the learning of other children.

Children who are late to school will do a detention with the principal.

VOLUNTEERS

Our Garden to Table programme is very successful with vegetables growing well and the children cooking what they have grown. However we do need volunteers to help our kitchen and garden specialists. You do not need to have lots of knowledge about cooking and gardening just come and help the students. Our programme runs on Tuesday from 11.10 until 12.40 and Wednesday from 8.45 until 12.40.If you can help we would love to see you.

HEALTH CLINIC

Our health clinic has now opened and the nurse will be checking children for sore throats and skin infections each day.

SOCIAL WORKER

Our new social worker will be starting early next week. If you have any issues and need support the social worker is available for you to see.

CROSS COUNTRY

The Dawson School cross-country will be run this Friday 9th November. It will start at 9.30. All the children will be on the field, which is both the start and ending place for the race.

You are welcome to come and support your child. If it is raining it will be postponed.

Things happening:

Wednesday 7th – Touch tournament at Nagati Otara Park

Thursday 9th - 30 children to go to Vector Arena for Fast5

Netball

Friday 9th - Cross Country at school

TV STARS

We have recently featured on Maori TV news showing off our garden to table programme. Sky TV saw this and now they have also filmed and it will feature on Sky country in the next two weeks. The courier also came in to do a story on our gardens. We recently won a donation from Mother Earth with the money being used to write our own recipe book.

It is great to be recognized for the good things we are doing at our school.

Regards – Angela Funaki

Dear Parents / Caregivers

Thank you to parents who are ensuring their child comes to school in correct uniform. Our children look fantastic and represent our school well when they are dressed correctly. It is important to purchase the stationery as soon as possible so your child can start their work.

Parent Teacher night
We have a meet the teacher on Tuesday 14th February.
Every parent or caregiver is welcome to attend. THIS WILL BE FROM 4pm -6pm.This year we are running it slightly differently. Every year level will meet for 10 minutes to outline the expectations and programme for their group of students. After this there will be time for you to meet the teacher or go to the next year levels talk. Teachers will be available up until 6pm.
The talks will be at the following times
Year 1 –     4.00 in Rm 1-4 block
Year 5/6 –     4.00 in Room 18
Year 2-        4.15 in Rooms 1-4 area
Year 3/4-     4.30 in Room 13

You will need to be on time to hear the talk but if you miss it you still have the opportunity to talk to the teacher before or after. This is an important time to find out what will be happening at school for your child and what is expected at home for homework.

Mrs Samuels from Room 7 will not be available on this night but if you wish to meet with her then she is available on Wednesday (15th February) after school until 4.

Family Fun Day / Athletics
On Thursday we will have our annual Family Fun day. All parents and families are invited to attend this day. We will start the day with athletics for our students so that we can choose out teams to represent us at the Otara schools day. This will be followed by the Family Fun day.
Come and join the fun. Get involved in an activity and win a prize. There will be no lunches from our lunch room that day but we will have a sausage sizzle and parents are encouraged to bring a picnic to have with their children.

Taekwon Do
Today the Year 6 children will be taught Taekwon do. This is a great sport and they will have lessons over 8 weeks at no cost as part of our PE programme and keeping ourselves safe.

Dawson Preschool
The Pre School has started. If you would like to enrol your child into preschool please come to the main office to get a form.

School Banking
We run school banking with the ASB.If your child already has an account they can start straight away or they can open an account and begin to learn about banking. Forms are available at the school office. Banking day is Tuesday.

Tennis
Many children will be involved in learning tennis skills next week. We are hoping to let children learn about lots of different sports they can become skillful in.

Quality Water Show
On the 14th February we have a show in the afternoon for many of our students . This is based around water and its usage

Working bee
If any parents are available next week to help us in our gardens we would appreciate the help. Over the holidays they have become full of weeds and grass and need a little bit of loving care. If you can help at all even for a short time we would appreciate it.

We encourage parents to become involved in school life as this is your school and children make good progress when parents are involved. Children like to see their parents attend an event, chat with the teacher or just visit them in the class. Come and support your child at one of the events we are offering.

Regards – Angela Funaki

1 February 2012

Dear Parents / Caregivers

Welcome to the new parents in our district and a big welcome back to all our other parents.
It was great to see so many of our students back starting school on the first day.

School Uniform
Every child is expected to be in school uniform this year. That includes all Year 6 pupils. We will send home a letter if your child is wearing any in correct articles of clothing.
There are no coloured long sleeved t-shirts to be worn under a short-sleeved T-shirt unless a correct school jumper is worn at the time so it cannot be seen. No child is to wear tights under shorts. We have tried to keep the uniform simple and affordable. It can be purchased from Postie Plus at the Manukau supercentre. New students will be given two weeks to get their child into uniform.

Hats are to be worn during Term 1,2 and 4. There is no school uniform hat yet but any hat worn needs to protect your child from the sun. If a child does not have a hat then they will not play in the playground but will sit in a shaded area of the school.
Some parents did not have their children in uniform last year and sent notes that the uniform was in the wash. Often this was after the weekend. The uniform does not take long to dry and can be hung in a garage or even a bathroom overnight to help with drying.

Stationery
All children will come home with school stationery lists. The cost is $30 for existing children and $35 for new children. There is a donation that can be paid on top of this to help pay for trips and performances.

Swimming
Year 3-5 children will once again have an opportunity to have swimming lessons this year. Swimming for these classes will start next Tuesday. Over the holidays there have been many drownings so it is important that children learn to swim. It is free and taught by experts at the Otara Recreation Centre. This is a great opportunity to get your child swimming lessons at no cost.

Taekwon Do
Starting next Friday the Year 6 children will be taught Taekwon do. This is a great sport and they will have lessons over 8 weeks at no cost as part of our PE programme and keeping ourselves safe.

Arrival at School
School starts at 8.45.It is important that students are on time ready to start their day. Late arrivals disrupt all the children in the class. School always finishes at 2.45

Dawson preschool
The Pre School will start again on Thursday February 9th. If you would like to enrol your child into preschool please come to the main office to get a form.

Lunches
We have our lunch sales as usual each day. Fruit in schools will start again next week.

Happenings around school
